Project Description
& Challenges
The owners of this Colonial style home were ready to make
substantial changes to their home to update the function and look of
the space. The project had two main objectives: modernizing the
kitchen and including some appliances that supported healthy eating
and nutrition, as well as making a master bedroom suite that was a
quiet retreat with a resort-like feel. Addressing these two
objectives at the same time offered both some challenges as well as
some opportunities.
The expansion of the master bedroom to create a luxurious suite
required building over the garage. This extra square footage allowed
for a foyer off main hall, master bedroom, dressing room, and closet
area. The client wanted the floor elevations to be the same, so the
design team used engineered lumber to span the garage. Mechanical
challenges resulted from this build out, as the heating & AC was
maxed out in the existing home. On the first floor, the plumbing
stack was in soffit and needed to be rerouted. Creative ductwork was
necessary to accomodate kitchen vent and the motor was mounted
outside. Pictured below are the results of this expansion for the
master bedroom suite:

Stepping across the threshold into the master bedroom suite, you
enter a foyer that leads you off to the left to the dressing room or
straight ahead to the bedroom. This space makes the transition very
evident
and even the wall color speaks of rest and relaxation. Beyond in the
bedroom, you can see the built in cabinetry with display space for
treasures from your travels.

Imagine
waking up in the morning and bringing your cup of coffee into this
dressing room to select your clothes for the day. Two full-sized
walk-in closets, with ample room for a full selection of clothing,
shoes and accessories are directly off of this room. The warm
traditional style carries through to the built-ins as well as the
windows that look out over the front yard. This room also serves as
a quiet spot that is perfect for
doing a jigsaw puzzle or working on your stamp collection. It's a
good spot
to spend the morning if you decide not to get out of your pajamas! |

This
bathroom is captures the essence of traditional style. With its rich
cherry cabinets with square raised panels and brass fixtures,
this bathroom has a luxurious feel that transcends time. The deep
tub with its whirlpool jets provides a spa-like setting for
relaxation. The deep
marble surround with its ogee detail provides an ample ledge to
perch candles, the latest spy novel or a glass of wine. Imagine
settling in for a relaxing soak in this tub!

This opulent shower has a brass finish semi-frameless sliding glass
door for easy access. The hand-held shower unit combined with a
built in seat makes this a shower that is easy to use for young and
old alike. The
neutral tones and the tumbled marble detail extend the sense of calm
into the shower. The radiant floor heat controls are located on the
wall and make the bathroom tiles just the right temperature. No
shock for the feet when stepping out of the warmth of the tub or
shower. It all feels just right! |

When
adding on to this center entrance Colonial home, it was important to
keep the style in-keeping and the symmetry of the home in balance.
In fact, the addition above the garage actually added
architectural interest and balance. The dormered windows and the
detail of
the garage doors complemented the Colonial style of the home. The
slight set back of the garage keeps the addition in proportion and
allows it to
blend seamlessly with the rest of the home. This integration of
style and
detail is critical in the successful design of an addition. Mission
accomplished! |
